I had the opportunity to ride the Sur-Ron electric bike for an entire year. I was mesmerized by its power and speed. 

As a general rule, Sur-Ron electric bikes are moped motorized bicycles known for their powerful motor, excellent torque, and higher speeds. These electric bikes are primarily designed for off-road use.

We will take a look at whether Sur-Ron electric bikes are street-legal and where they can be ridden. In addition, we will discuss what kind of requirements and licensure are needed when riding on a Sur-Ron eBike. We will also take a look at how fast you can go and some specific cost considerations that you will need to take into account.

Is Sur-Ron Street Legal? (Can You Ride Sur-Ron on the Road?)

As a whole, Sur-Ron e-bikes are not street-legal. This is because Sur-Ron electric bikes are generally manufactured for off-road use. Fortunately, one Sur-Ron e-bike model, the Sur-Ron Light Bee LBX (L1e), is manufactured for on-road use.

In most states, Class 1 and 2 e-bikes have a limited speed of 20 mph (32.2 kmh), while Class 3 e-bikes can have a limited speed of 28 mph (45.1 kmh). However, most Sur-Ron electric bikes are mopeds that can go more than 30 mph (48.3 kmh). Therefore, they might not be allowed to be ridden on the streets.

Fortunately, Sur-Ron has the Sur-Ron LBX (L1e) e-bike model, which is designed for on-road use. This electric bike has a top speed of 30 mph (48.3 kmh). Though manufactured to be road legal, this e-bike is a moped e-bike, so an appropriate license, registration, and insurance are required.

Before buying any Sur-Ron electric bike, it is best to understand your state or local e-bike laws. Then, it is your responsibility to comply with those laws.

What is the Fastest Sur-Ron?

As a whole, the fastest Sur-Ron electric bike model as of this writing is the Storm Bee F., which has a maximum speed of 68 mph (110 km/h).

Aside from its top speed of 68 mph (109.4 kmh), this high-powered e-bike can provide a nominal power output of 10,000 watts and a peak power output of 22,500 watts. This electric bike is manufactured for off-road use.

What is the Best Sur-Ron?

As a general rule, determining which Sur-Ron e-bike is the best depends entirely on you. For instance, the Sur-Ron Light Bee S (youth) is the best in terms of cost. On the other hand, the Storm Bee F would be the best in terms of power, battery capacity, and speed.

All Sur-Ron electric bikes are of high-quality and reliable materials. So, you will never be disappointed in choosing any Sur-Ron electric bike because all of them are worth the cost. 

If the features of the most affordable Sur-Ron e-bike meet your expectations, then we recommend that model for you. However, suppose you demand higher power, better battery capacity, and speed. In that case, we recommend the Storm Bee F.

How Much Does a Sur-Ron Cost?

As a general rule, the cost of Sur-Ron e-bikes varies depending on the e-bike’s model. As of this writing, the most affordable is the Sur-Ron Light Bee S (Youth), which costs $3,183, while the most expensive is the Storm Bee F costing $11,999.

The Sur-Ron USA website only has one Sur-Ron e-bike model, the Sur-Ron Light Bee X. This Sur-Ron e-bike costs $4,400. However, a Sur-Ron e-bike dealer sells the e-bike: Luna Cycle for only $4,350.

The Sur-Ron Canada website sells two Sur-Ron e-bike models, the Sur-Ron Light Bee S, and Sur-Ron Light Bee X. The Sur-Ron Light Bee S costs $3,183 (CAD 4,334), while the Sur-Ron Light Bee X costs $4,580 (CAD 6,287). The website will also be selling the Sur-Ron Storm Bee soon. However, there is no estimated price for this e-bike yet.

The Sur-Ron UK website sells three Sur-Ron e-bike models, the Sur-Ron Light Bee X (off-road), Sur-Ron Light Bee X (L1e), and Sur-Ron Light Bee (Youth). The Sur-Ron Light Bee X (off-road) e-bike costs $4,580 (£4,051); the Sur-Ron Light Bee X (L1e) e-bike costs $4,400 (£3,891), and the Sur-Ron Light Bee Youth costs $3,183 (£2,815).

How Much Does It Cost to Charge a Sur-Ron?

On average, the charging cost of the Sur-Ron electric bike varies per model. It costs between $0.57 to $2.55. The charging cost is significantly affected by how frequently you charge your electric bike.

Is a Sur-Ron an eBike?

As a general rule, Sur-Ron is an electric bike. Sur-Ron e-bikes are mopeds, enabling them to provide more power than any ordinary electric bike. Just like standard e-bikes, Sur-Ron e-bikes have motors that assist in pedaling.

What Motor Does Sur-Ron Use?

As a whole, all the Sur-Ron electric bike models currently available use a permanent magnet synchronous motor with an air-cooling system. This type of motor achieves high efficiency when riding at high speeds.

Do You Need a License to Ride a Sur-Ron?

As a general rule, you need a license to ride any Sur-Ron electric bike. Sur-Ron e-bike models are moped e-bikes. They have more power and speed than ordinary electric bikes, so a license and insurance may be required when riding. 

Because you are riding at higher speeds, it is recommended that you wear a crash helmet.

Is Sur-Ron Street Legal in California?

As a whole, Sur-Ron is not street-legal in California. California prohibits riding moped bicycles on the streets. However, you can register your Sur-Ron electric bike as a moped electric bicycle in order to ride it on the road.

What is the Best Fork Upgrade for Sur-Ron?

As a general rule, the best fork upgrade for Sur-Ron is the Fox 40. This fork is known for its excellent performance and control when riding downhill. In addition, it provides low-speed and high-speed compression adjustment, enabling you to have a smoother and more stable ride.

As a whole, the Sur-Ron direct mount stem is made of high-strength aluminum alloy, making them durable and fatigue resistant. Sur-Ron sells this accessory for approximately $54. You can also buy this from an authorized dealer.

On their UK website, Sur-Ron sells Nukeproof Horizon direct mount stem for $73.67 (£64.95). 

On their Canada website, Sur-Ron sells their own handlebar direct mount stem.

The Sur-Ron direct mount is also available on the LunaCycle for only $35. 

Sur-Ron Rear Tire Choices (Sur-Ron Tire Size)

As a whole, the rear tire size of the Sur-Ron Light Bee X (off-road and L1e) is 70/100-19, whereas the Sur-Ron Light Bee S (Youth) tire size is 70/100-17. Sur-Ron 70/100-19 tires are available for purchase from Urban Moto Parts and other authorized dealers. 

Sur-Ron Brake Upgrade

As a whole, Sur-Ron has an integrated LED headlight and taillight, but it doesn’t come with integrated brake lights. You can choose to install a turn signal or a brake light on your Sur-Ron electric bike.

As a whole, if the range of your Sur-Ron electric bike does not meet your needs, you can choose to use a Sur-Ron battery extender to acquire more range. You can also carry an extra battery with you to use when your original battery gets low.

You can build your own battery pack extender for your Sur-Ron e-bike. However, we do not recommend it. Instead, we recommend buying a Sur-Ron battery extender from SurRonshop. You might need an extra compartment on your e-bike, though.
