Used eBikes Buying Guide (Tips From an eBike Shop Owner)
I have owned an electric bike shop selling used eBikes for years and many people have asked me for tips on buying used eBikes. I always outline the following tips on buying a used eBike.
- Choose to buy from a recommended dealer or a legit seller
- Check proof of ownership
- Check if the e-bike is not listed on any theft registry
- Check the overall condition of the e-bike
- Check if the price is right
- Ask if you could test-drive
- Check for damaged or missing parts
- Inspect the e-bike for any signs of damage or missing parts
- Make sure that the electric bike comes with important keys and a charger
- Check the total mileage that the previous owner put on the e-bike
- Note that warranties may not apply to you
Choose to Buy from a Recommended Dealer or a Legit Seller
There are companies or dealers that sell used electric bikes, and most of them have websites. If they do, you can always check for customer reviews. You can also ask others who have purchased used electric bikes from the same dealer or seller about their reputation and the quality of their products. If you are buying from an individual (not a company), for instance, someone is posting a secondhand e-bike for sale online, always ensure that the person posting it is a legitimate seller. This way, you can ensure your money won’t be spent in vain.
Check Proof of Ownership
This tip is essential. If the company or the individual is the valid owner of the used electric bike, it will be fine for them to show any proof of ownership, such as a receipt and documents.
Depending on the type of electric bike, your local or state laws may require it to be registered. In an event like this, you won’t have a problem with registering or transferring ownership of the electric bike to you because the company or the individual from whom the used e-bike came is the true owner of the e-bike. Not only that, it would also help you ensure that the secondhand electric bike you are about to purchase is not stolen.
If the seller can’t or won’t provide an original receipt, then we advise looking for another used electric bike to purchase.
Check if the eBike is Not Listed on Any Theft Registry
This is one of the essential tips you should follow. As a soon-to-be electric bike owner, you would want to avoid legal complications. If the used e-bike is registered on a theft registry, and you buy it even without knowing it, you might face legal issues that could result in an investment loss. Knowing that the used e-bike you just purchased is not stolen gives you peace of mind. You wouldn’t have to worry about dealing with legal consequences. Thus, you can confidently ride your electric bike anywhere and anytime.
Check the Overall Condition of the eBike
This is also a MUST! Some people buy used electric bikes because they usually fall within their budget. Of course, since this is a used e-bike, it is expected that some of its parts already have wear and tear. However, it is essential to check if the e-bike can still perform well because why would you spend money on something that can hardly be ridden? If the e-bike has a lot of damage and you still decide to purchase it, you will still have to have it fixed, which will cost you money.
Check if the Price is Right
Some companies or individuals selling secondhand electric bikes usually set the price of their used e-bikes reasonably. As a buyer, it is best to check if the price is reasonable enough for you, given the overall condition of the e-bike. This will also help you assess and ensure you pay the appropriate amount. Additionally, this can also help you avoid possible scams, especially when you are buying online. If the quality of the e-bike listed is as good as new and the price seems ‘too good to be true,’ then there’s a high chance that it is a scam.
Moreover, in some cases, knowing the price is also a basis for negotiation, especially if buying an e-bike from an individual.
Ask if You Could Test Drive
A test drive will allow you to experience the e-bike firsthand. Since you are buying a secondhand electric bike, it would be great to test it first before deciding to purchase it. A test drive will help you assess the overall performance of the e-bike and see if it’s comfortable enough for you. It will also enable you to check if the e-bike fits your riding style, preference, and needs.
Inspect the eBike for Any Signs of Damage or Missing Parts
Typically, most used electric bikes already exhibit some wear and tear, and responsible sellers or companies usually disclose any potential issues, damage, or missing parts of the electric bike in their listings. That’s why it’s highly recommended to verify whether the listed condition matches the actual state of the e-bike and assess the extent of any damage or the importance of missing parts.
Keep in mind that if you’re considering purchasing a heavily damaged e-bike or one with numerous missing parts, the cost of repairs can add up significantly. However, if the damages are minor, such as typical wear and tear, and the price is reasonable, it may still be a viable purchase.
Make Sure that the Electric Bike Comes with Important Keys and Charger
This is also very important! All electric bikes come with a charger and typically some keys. If you plan to purchase a used electric bike, having these accessories is essential. Just imagine buying a used e-bike without a charger. An e-bike charger usually costs more than a hundred dollars. Without one, you won’t be able to charge your electric bike when the battery is drained. This leaves you with no choice but to ride your e-bike the old-fashioned way, pedaling like a regular bicycle.
Additionally, the keys are crucial for unlocking and locking your e-bike, ensuring its security. In summary, both keys and a charger are vital for your e-bike’s functionality and security.
If the seller says the charger and keys are missing, consider having second thoughts about buying that particular e-bike.
Check the Total Mileage that the Previous Owner Put on the eBike
Knowing the total mileage that the previous owner has put on the electric bike provides valuable insights into the extent of its usage. Typically, a higher mileage indicates more significant wear and tear on the e-bike, potentially leading to increased maintenance costs. It also plays a role in determining the e-bike’s resale value; lower mileage often translates to a higher resale value, while higher mileage tends to lower the value.
Additionally, the mileage of the electric bike offers crucial information about the overall health of its battery. Keep in mind that each battery has a limited number of charge and discharge cycles. Over time, the battery’s performance tends to decline. If a battery has undergone numerous charge and discharge cycles, its performance may have already diminished significantly.

Note that Warranties May Not Apply to You
In most cases, the warranty for a purchased e-bike only applies to the original buyer or to the individual whose name appears on the original receipt. Since your name won’t be on the original receipt, you may be unable to utilize the warranty for any e-bike components.
However, if there is only minor wear and tear, and if the terms and conditions of the warranty still apply, you can discuss the matter with the seller and explore the possibility of filing a warranty claim for the specific parts before completing the e-bike purchase.
Should I Buy a Second-Hand eBike?
As a general rule, you can buy a secondhand electric bike, especially if you are on a very tight budget. The decision to purchase a used electric bike is entirely up to you. If you plan to buy one, just ensure the e-bike still performs well.
One of the primary benefits of purchasing a secondhand electric bike is its lower cost. Sellers usually set the value of secondhand e-bikes at a reasonable price. However, when buying a secondhand electric bike, we recommend following the tips we have mentioned above. This way, you can assess whether the used e-bike you plan to purchase is priced correctly, performs well enough, and aligns with your preferences and needs.
There’s a reason why used electric bikes are significantly cheaper than brand-new ones. The used e-bike may not perform at its best, so always inspect the e-bike carefully and make a thoughtful decision. Failure to do so might result in experiencing more drawbacks than the benefits of buying a used e-bike.

How Do You Test a Used eBike?
As a whole, you can test the used electric bike by seeing the e-bike in person. That way, you’ll be able to inspect the parts and the overall condition of the used e-bike personally. You can also ask to test drive the e-bike to assess its performance.
It’s always a great idea to buy an electric bike that is located nearby. This way, you can personally inspect the electric bike, which is much better than relying solely on online pictures. During your inspection, be sure to check for any damage, and wear and tear on the e-bike’s parts. We also strongly recommend checking the battery and motor condition since the e-bike won’t perform as it should without these components.
For your safety, it’s crucial to examine the brakes as well, as they are essential. You can also ask the seller if you can bring a professional mechanic or technician to inspect the electric bike. However, this may require you to pay professional fees. Additionally, remember to request a test drive to determine whether it’s comfortable and suited for you.
How Much is a Used Electric Bike?
As a general rule, used electric bikes may cost 10% or more less than the original price, depending on factors such as mileage, battery health, brand and model, age, and the overall condition of the secondhand electric bike.
Mileage can significantly influence the price range of a used e-bike. Mileage indicates the total distance the previous owner covered while riding the e-bike. Higher mileage often correlates with a lower value for the e-bike, while lower mileage tends to result in a higher value.
Another factor that contributes to the price of a secondhand electric bike is its age. Newer e-bikes typically have high-quality components and are in better condition. Conversely, older ones generally exhibit more wear and tear, making them less expensive.
The battery’s health is a crucial consideration that can impact an e-bike’s value. The battery is one of the most critical components of an electric bike. When the battery delivers minimal performance, it can significantly reduce the price.
The overall condition of the electric bike can also influence its price. E-bikes with extensive damage or missing parts will typically command a lower price. However, it’s essential to consider whether you’re willing to invest in a used electric bike that requires substantial repairs.
The brand and model of the electric bike can significantly affect its value. Even when comparing e-bikes with the same battery health, age, or condition, those from well-known brands or models generally have a higher resale value than lesser-known alternatives.
The seller’s motivation to sell is another factor affecting an e-bike’s price. When purchasing from an individual, there may be more room for negotiations, especially if the seller urgently needs funds. However, if you’re buying from a company, prices may be fixed without room for bargaining.
What’s the Lifespan of an Electric Bike?
As a whole, a high-quality electric bike may have a lifespan of about ten years or even longer if properly maintained. The e-bike motor can last more than 10,000 miles, and the e-bike batteries can last about 2-5 years.
The overall lifespan of an electric bike can be significantly affected by several factors, including the quality of parts, usage, and maintenance.
If you purchase an electric bike made of high-quality materials, not only can it deliver maximum performance, but it also tends to last longer. When the frame and components are designed to handle diverse terrains and weather conditions, you can enjoy your electric bike for an extended period without requiring frequent repairs or replacements.
The way you use your electric bike can also have a substantial impact on its lifespan. More extreme riding styles and riding in wet or muddy terrains can exert additional stress on the e-bike’s components, leading to faster wear and tear.
Additionally, the maintenance of your e-bike plays a crucial role in determining its lifespan. Regular maintenance helps keep your electric bike and its components in durable condition, reducing wear and tear and ensuring a longer lifespan.
You can use the following products to clean your electric bike:
- Finish Line Ebike and Exercise Bike Cleaner Aerosol
- Muc-Off Mox-904 Nano Tech Bike Cleaner
- WD-40 Specialist Bike Degreaser
Another thing that may contribute to a longer lifespan for an electric bike is storing it properly when it’s not in use or when you need to. We have an article about storage ideas for electric bikes, and you can read the article here.
What to Know Before Buying an eBike?
As a general rule, before buying an electric bike, you must know the following:
- Battery capacity of the electric bike
- Motor power
- E-bike’s total load capacity
- Frame size and fit
- Electric bike components
- Customer reviews
Before buying an e-bike, it’s crucial to check its battery capacity. In most cases, battery capacity determines how far your electric bike can travel on a single charge. If you plan to ride for extended periods, consider purchasing an e-bike with a higher battery capacity.
Another crucial factor to consider is the motor, which plays a vital role in an electric bike as it provides assistance while riding. A powerful motor allows for faster acceleration, making the e-bike well-suited for activities like extreme riding, navigating rough terrains, or carrying heavy cargo. Therefore, if you have a penchant for extreme riding or intend to use the e-bike for cargo purposes, prioritize models equipped with motors capable of generating a continuous power of 500W or more.
Additionally, evaluate the e-bike’s total load capacity. Most electric bikes can support weights ranging from 220 to 350 lbs (100 to 159 kg), suitable for riders of average weight. However, if you are heavier or plan to use the e-bike for cargo, consider a model with a higher total load capacity.
Comfort is a crucial aspect to consider. Check the frame size and geometry of the electric bike to ensure it suits your height and riding comfort.
Inspect the components of the e-bike to determine if they are made of high-quality materials and meet your comfort and riding needs. Some riders may prefer specific features such as suspension forks, particular gears, or racks. Therefore, when purchasing an e-bike, assess its components to match your preferences.
Reading customer reviews of the electric bike can also provide valuable insights, helping you determine if it’s a worthy purchase based on the experiences and opinions of others.
