Can you Replace the Battery on an eBike?

As a general rule, if an eBike has a removable battery you can personally replace the battery on an eBike. Most electric bikes with removable batteries have a key that you use to unlock the battery so that you can pull out the old battery from the eBike and replace it with a new one.

Types of E-Bike Batteries

The first important thing to understand about electric bike batteries is that there are several kinds, and they each have a different price because they are made out of different materials and each has a slightly different lifespan.

The three common types of batteries are Lithium-Ion batteries, Nickel batteries, and Lead batteries. There are several variations of each kind of battery.

Lithium-Ion Ebike Battery

Lithium-ion batteries use lithium in their chemistry, hence the name. Lithium batteries are known for being the most power-dense batteries out of the three, meaning that it provides the most power per unit of volume. This allows lithium-ion batteries to be much smaller and lighter than the other two kinds of batteries.

This can be a great advantage to have in a battery as it will last for a long time, hold a charge, and your electric bike will stay relatively light.

Nickel Electric Bike Battery

Nickel batteries use, you guessed it, nickel in their chemistry. This is not the best option for an electric bike battery as they have a tendency to have rapid discharge, which is when a battery will not charge to its full power after a while because it has lost voltage.

You would want to charge it to full capacity and use it up completely between charges for the best performance. They can also be quite heavy for a battery and at the end of their lifespan it can be quite toxic.

Lead E-Bike Battery

The final kind of battery is a Lead battery, and these are the typical lead-acid batteries that are used as car batteries. While these batteries are not as power dense as the other two types of batteries, they are still better than using nickel batteries.

Lead-acid batteries are widely available and super cheap. On top of that, they recharge very well which gives them more uses in between charges.

Lifespan of an Electric Bike Battery

It is important to know about the lifespan of electric bike batteries. Generally, knowing how the batteries work will help you get a good idea of the lifespan of each kind of battery and if the price is worth it.

The most important thing to understand about battery lifespan is that high-quality batteries have long lifespans, and low-quality ones do not last very long. The quality of a battery is usually directly related to its price.

An electric bike battery usually has an estimate of how long it will last based on cycles. A cycle is when the battery is charged from 0% to 100%. The amount of cycles that a battery will last is based on about 80% of its total power, meaning that at the max amount of cycles, it will be operating at 80% capacity and will continue to deplete as it is used more.

When buying a battery, you can check its lifespan in miles by multiplying the number of cycles until 80% capacity by how much range each charge has. If a battery has 1000 cycles that each take the bike about 20 miles, the bike will start to give out at around 20,000 miles.

If a bike only has 500 cycles, but each one takes the bike 80 miles, it is overall a better battery because its lifespan is over 40,000 miles.

While lithium batteries are typically the best kind of battery for an electric bike, if it is a poor quality battery, then it will have a poor lifespan and it would be a better deal to buy a lead-acid battery with a longer lifespan.

How to Expand an eBike Battery Life

You can expand an Ebike Battery Life by keeping it cool while it’s not in use, storing the battery separate from the eBike if it won’t be used for long periods of time, and using the battery in a responsible way.

While each battery has a different life span, taking good care of any of them will help the battery last for as long as possible. Batteries do not usually respond well to heat, so storing the bike in a cool, dry space will help preserve its lifespan. Allow the battery to cool down before charging it.

This means that you should wait a little while after riding the bike before you plug it in.

Another good habit to get into is taking the battery out and turning it off when you are going to go a long period of time without using it. Winter months when it is too snowy to ride, or during the rainy season are good times to take this precaution.

Finally, don’t use up the whole charge when riding it. Instead, only use up about half of the charge or 3/4 of the charge. This does not mean you can’t use the full charge ever, it just means that you should use less of the battery more often.
